Lessons from the garden

Lesson #1:
From now on the VERY first thing I must do before letting the boys play outside is to clean up Tana's "spot".  She is trained to use one location on the side of our house which is usually not frequented by anyone else.  Today, much to my misfortune, my sons were lured out to the street by the sight of a motorized toy car.  Darned if they didn't find every single land mine.  This incident led to getting striped of their clothes, shoes, and toys at the back door and a shower before dinner.  Let's just say that I was not popular and they would have been happy to sit down to dinner as is.

Our garden gnome "Norman" and a trouble making gnome named Fritz.

Lesson #2:
Rabbits are cute, but very pesky.  The boys weren't the only ones causing trouble in the garden today, the family of darling rabbits living in the field next door were very busy as well.  They have decided that my herb garden would make a lovely home for their burrow.  They ate up a ton of oregano, dug a surprisingly deep hole, and chewed right through two sections of drip irrigation tubing.  I won't be surprised when I find Peter Rabbit's shoes and tiny coat out there tomorrow morning!

Lesson #3:
The sun needs to shine more!  My garden is hanging in there, but we have had an inordinate amount of rain this spring.  I'm hoping June will be more gracious than May.  There is a lot I still need to learn (how much to thin the carrot seedlings?) but I am just considering it all a big experiment and excusing myself from perfectionism.  Tonight I ate the first harvest (tiny-good thing I was home alone) in a little salad with my mom's Walla Walla Sweet Onion Rice Casserole.  "Micro greens" as they call them in fancy restaurants!  Thinnings of heirloom carrots, arugula, beet greens, tom thumb lettuce, red iceberg, mascara lettuce, pea shoots, spinach, radish, and baby Walla Walla sweets.

Lesson #4:
Not really a lesson, just an excited observation.  The grapes are coming!  The vines are chock full.

Our dear "Uncie Jonny" & Daddy's Birthday

It's been a busy weekend!  We spent the whole weekend with family, celebrating my hubby's birthday and the brief visit of "Uncie Jonny".  That's not a typo, that is exactly what my son Walter calls him with much affection.  Jonathan has been away being a very important guy (current sophisticated title unknown by me, I can't keep up with his promotions) in the US Marine Corps.  This Memorial Day, we are thankful for Jonathan and all the people he serves with who are working for peace.  And we frequently admonish him sternly, to stay safe or else he will be in big trouble with a bunch of angry ladies in the Pacific Northwest.

In other news, the fact that Matt and I have birthdays in the same week and a recent 1st birthday party for a little friend has Wally and Fritz pretty confused.  Why all of a sudden it is birthday season, but not their birthday is not going over that pleasantly.  "No!  It's NOT Daddy's birthday, it's my birthday!!"  As you can see in the photo above, he was at the end of his rope after Daddy's birthday dinner at Firehouse.  (Our current favorite place-You should GO THERE!)

Two cakes

I was a lucky birthday girl yesterday and got two birthday cakes!  Too bad I am home alone now and tempted to eat them all up myself.  I am going to be good, I am going to be good, I am going to be good...

My first cake was pumpkin spice (not seasonally appropriate, but it is a favorite and the weather around here is like November anyway) baked with the help of my boys.  My second cake was an ice cream cake (chocolate chip mint, yum!) brought home by my dear husband.

This afternoon the sun came out for all of 15 minutes and we ran out to play and soak up all the vitamin D we could get.  In the mail box was a sweet little gift from my sister that was very interesting to Wally and Fritz.  They asked to wear them, really, honestly they did...

Happy Birthday
to Me!!!

Playing pretend

This just overheard moments ago in the Petkun household...
Wally to Fritz:  "We are making a house.  (Pillows all off the sofa)
Your name is Bridget.  My name is Uncle Jonny."

Dozer Day

A week ago we took the boys to Dozer Day.  It is a really great event that raises money for local children's charities.  I see many annual trips to Dozer Day in our future.  Dirt, rocks, quarry, huge machinery...a boy's paradise.  http://www.nutterfoundation.org/dozer.html

Hipstamatic

The photos in my last post were taken with the "Hipstamatic" IPhone app.  The app takes photos and gives them the look of a vintage toy camera.  I love the way they look, it makes simple, normal, daily activity look so nostalgic!

Cutie pie Cousin Ryan over for a play date.

Sweet Tana waiting for crumbs.

15 cent laundry

I recently bought this sign at Anthropologie and hung it up in my laundry room.  It makes me laugh.  I really do insane amounts of laundry.  The laundry room at our new house has become the epicenter of Mommy's life.  It is a great room with a sunny window, lots of counter space, and the home of my work and entertainment.  People give their blogs very clever names and I felt the pressure to come up with a good one to represent me.  And so, "15 cent laundry"...the place where I sew, plant seeds, blog, and fold laundry of course!

A Heidi Baker Classic, New Revised Standard

"Sausage Rolls" recipe invented by my mother, one of my childhood favorites.  I revisited this recipe a few days ago and made a few additions to the original Italian sausage and swiss cheese.  The new version also has sauteed onions and swiss chard.  So delish, I'll probably never go back to the original.

PS. The dough is quite simply a bag of frozen Rhodes dough rolls.  As if I have time to make dough!

A record of my blessed life.

Have I lost my marbles?  A blog?  Oh dear.

Today I got into my boys baby books to keep track of a few notables, new teeth, height/weight charts, etc.  I tried very hard to keep these up to date for their first years, packed with details of every developmental milestone and treasured baby mementos.  But after "Baby's First Year" the scrapbooks include only one page per year, hardly enough room for a birthday photo.  I don't have a lot of time on my hands (two toddlers = chaos) nor do I easily come up with witty prose, so I expect my blog entries to be brief.  However, I don't want to loose the wonderful details and small moments of watching these two boys grow up to my historically terrible memory.  And so, a blog.  A record of my blessed life.
